The history of the Stroud and District Skittles League can be traced back to its origins in 1935 and contained strong links with the now closed Stroud Brewery Company. Representatives of certain Licensed Houses were invited to a meeting on 27th September 1935 at the Stroud Brewery, where it was agreed to form a skittles league, to be known as the Stroud and District Skittles League. The League was formed of eighth teams, the Anchor Hotel Epney, Crown and Anchor Hotel Stonehouse, Greyhound Hotel Tetbury, Waggon and Horses Inn Thrupp, Yew Tree Inn Horsley, Stroud Brewery Company, Stroud Brewery Transport Department, and the British Legion in Horsley. The Stroud Brewery were approached and kindly agreed to donate a trophy for the winners, this trophy is still awarded to winning teams to this current day.
